HHPAY S3E01: Secret Origin, The Legend of Mei Pie & Under the Hood

I've already finished that joy Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi that was Season 2, and in June 2005, the show was renewed for a third season. How does Season 3 stack up? Well, I'm going to review it for all of you!

79. Secret Origin.
Written by: Guy Toubes.
Aired: 17 February 2006.

In their childhood years, Ami and Yumi arrive at Camp Youwannasushi and are met by Atchan, who tells them about Rumaki the bunk monster. Yumi is grabbed by Rumaki and Ami and Atchan go under the bed to save her.

Don't the girls look cute as kids! I have to say, as a kid, Ami, with the exception of hair and clothing colour and style, looked a bit like Sonia from Codename Kids Next Door. I wonder if this references the person who voiced both characters?

Here's where they first met Atchan.

I have to say, as a kid, Atchan looked like Mac from Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends.

Camp Youwannasushi! A pun on "You want a sushi".

I wonder if Yumi started to become a tough girl here?

Atchan's eternal gratefulness.

Atchan is crazy. Blblblblblblblblblblbl!

Ironic of Rumaki to say that kidnapping is wrong.

All he eats is rock candy.

Dust monkeys!

Here we go again!

I must say, this was such an interesting episode! We get some origins of Ami and Yumi at camp, and where they first met Atchan. Clever, and how Yumi didn't notice sure encouraged her goth girl persona. And also, Atchan said "Excuse me", making this the only time he referred to himself in the first person.

Mt rating: 10/10.

80. The Legend of Mei Pie.
Written by: David Shayne.
Aired: 17 February 2006.

Yumi needs a new guitar and must accomplish certain tasks to get one. So she meets Master Mei Pie, who sends her to get some items.

Ami had the nerve to break Yumi's Game Girl?

Did someone say pie?

Yumi sure has to get all that stuff for Mei Pie?

"Thank you, come again." Could that be a reference to Apu De Beaumarchais saying "Thank you, come again!"

Cat eating a bone? I've seen everything!

Garden gnome.

Yech! Sneezing  frog!

Ami is Yumi's conscience?

Kaz needs a souvenir.

Yeah! Yumi's guitar is good as new!

Yep, Kaz does have a souvenir after all!

This sure was a strange quest for Yumi. All because she wasn't enthusiastic playing her electric guitar. I have to say, Kaz's moments were funny, especially when he said "Did someone say 'Pie'?" when he was Yumi's conscience and when he received a souvenir at the end! Anyway, a grand adventure for Yumi.

My rating: 9.5/10.

81. Under the Hood.
Written by: David Shayne.
Aired: 17 February 2006.

The tour bus is acting erratically and Ami and Yumi go inside to find out what is wrong. They find out that the man who sold them the bus had moved into its carburettor.

Kaz can sing good for once!

This bus has a mind of its own!

The bus sure is crazy! I wonder if it references The Magic School Bus, a bus that has a mind of shapeshifting?

Crazy Kaz!

So this is where the band got the bus!

Yumi is flat!

What wonderful swimmers these girls are!

So this is what's wrong with the bus! The guy who sold it to the band!

Yumi actually broke the 4th here! "This is a weird episode."

Beautiful truck!

Aw, hugging the bus!

This episode sure was surreal. Well, not as surreal as Rock n Roe, but it had the girls finding out what's wrong with the tour bus. It's a good thing they found the cure, being the guy who sold the bus to them. Definitely a wacky episode!

My rating: 9/10.

Final thoughts:

This sure was a very good way to start Season 3! We got origins of the girls' childhood, Yumi having her guitar fixed, and the bus going wacko! Very funny and a great way to start a season!

Episode rating: 9.5/10.

Season 3 scorecard:
1. Secret Origin: 10/10.
2. The Legend of Mei Pie: 9.5/10.
3. Under the Hood: 9/10.

Season 3 so far: 9.5/10.
