MSB S5E13: Dorothy Ann and the Deep Blue Sea + Season 5 overall

Let's go looking for Jyoti's grandma's Smart Locket with this Season 5 finale. Going deep into the deep, deep ocean. Blog, do your stuff!

65. Dorothy Ann and the Deep Blue Sea.

Ms. Frizzle turns the Magic School Bus into a submarine to take the class into the ocean's darkest depths and retrieve Jyoti's high-tech locket.

We start with Dorothy Ann using Jyoti's grandma's Smart Locket to fish for tide data.

She's even explaining to Carlos what the locket contains.

Carlos suspects it's tip top for "Don't lose it."

Problem. There's no locket on her line.

But the rest of the class is relaxing, and Tim is explaining how to discover denizens of ocean zones.

Which is Splash zone! Best field trip ever!

But Dorothy Ann and Carlos have bad news. It's about the locket. It's gone.

Liz couldn't help but hide in the bucket seeing what Jyoti's saying to Dorothy Ann

This sounds like a case of search and rescue.

"Does anyone else notice that when she rhymes, I usually wish I'd stayed home? No? Just me?

This further sums up my headscratcher about this series.

Time for the class to explore the deep ocean!

There's heaps of marine life in the sea!

Lucky Jyoti was there, or Dorothy Ann would've been sent far into the ocean by the current.

Holy Tuna!

Holy Mackerel! A school of them!

And there's also jellyfish and a whale shark!

This elephant will measure how heavy the sea pressure is. It compares to a young elephant.

It's a sea monster! A goblin shark to be precise.

"According to my reesearch, there is no reesearch! Well, hardly any."

It's funny there's no research. 

 

It's funny that Fiona asked about the class getting eaten. Referencing the time they got eaten by a tuna.

Here are some fish showing bioluminescence.

These lobsters look as though they turn invisible.

The only way the bus can blend in is by turning red.

There's Jyoti's locket!

Come on! Ride on The Magic Lobster!

But this cephalopod stole the locket!

"You know, as my giant squid-chasing great-great grandmother Octavia used to say, 'Let's get kraken!'."

"I don't get it."
"A Kraken is a legendary squid monster."
"Oh."

Actually, a kraken is a legendary octopus in the neighbourhood.

An angler fish!

Sea monsters!

But they found another way to save Jyoti's smart locket. They did it!

 

Arnold's thinking this is a happy ending, all because they saved Jyoti's smart locket. Hugging Jyoti and Dorothy Ann like this sounds a bit familiar, doesn't it?

 Video Game Empire, Video Game Empire everywhere!

"I'm getting a sinking feeling!"

Literally! 

 Tube worms! Exist under the deep, deep ocean.

"I knew I should've stayed in the intertidal zone today."

Would've been funny if Arnold did stay in the intertidal zone. 

There's even mussels that live there.

"Outside their zone?"

"Carlos!"

Good one, Carlos! 

But Dorothy Ann decided to post her blog on Sci-Fi Freakout! Wicked! Awesome!

Where's Jyoti? Dorothy Ann just wants to use it again.

Goldie's discovered some angler fish.

And Goldie's trying to get a selfie, foreshadowing the next episode.

This episode has shown the class going deeper than they've ever gone before.

There was even a reference to Gets Eaten, when the class got eaten by a tuna when helping with Arnold and Keesha's two-things-that-go-together report.

Dorothy Ann confirmed that the class are 10 in this series, by saying Ralphie is 10.

Arnold mentioning he "Should've stayed home today" and that he "should've stayed in the intertidal zone today" makes me wonder why he didn't get homeschooled in this, since Phoebe went back to her old school.

Not much to say here, except this episode would've worked a bit better if it were Jyoti-centric than Dorothy Ann-centric, considering that Smart Locket belongs to Jyoti's grandma. But those moments where Arnold disapproved were funny, and the way Carlos explained the joke to Arnold, and when Arnold hugged Dorothy Ann and Jyoti were funny. But what's next? Find out next time.

My rating: 10/10.

Season 5 final thoughts:

At first, I had my doubts about this Magic School Bus series, but I eventually warmed up to it. As Professor Frizzle said in Plays Ball, never judge a book by its cover. Sure, the animation seems cheap, the kids look different, but it still has that feel of the original show. Even if there's no Phoebe in this series, at least it's the original class. We got a remix of the theme song sung by Lin-Manuel Miranda. They got Kate McKinnon to voice Fiona Frizzle. I can picture Kate speaking every time Fiona speaks. And they got Lily Tomlin to reprise her role as Valerie Frizzle, not just to appeal to those who grew up watching the first 4 seasons, but to represent the old generation passing the torch over to the new generation.

MSB S5E12: Monster Power

I'm going to be making power with this review on the power episode. One where Arnold is as fearful as ever. Blog, do your stuff!

A skittish Arnold looks to alternative energy sources to help keep his fears at bay while camping outdoors with Ms. Frizzle and the class.

Here's something scary. Arnold is watching a scary movie.

It's....it's... The Blot Monster!

Arnold just couldn't help but tell tales about it.

The Friz is ready to take the class on a camping trip.

Arnold deliberately left behind his camping supplies, but he's given fireproof pyjamas.

Does Arnold really need that much light?

Keesha's got a cool bike here.

Next thing that you know, you're seeing this bus going down the waterfall.

They're on a no-nail-biting flight on The Magic Aeroplane.

Where can Arnold get all that energy for the lights? He and Jyoti are in the middle of nowhere!

The Magic Movie Theatre will explain how.

A generator.

A lot of light Arnold has. Christmas lights included.

But the class are having pizza and grape drinks on their picnic.

Ride on The Magic School Boat!

And the water is powering it backward.

But one problem with this generator. It's powered by gas, polluting the air.

BLOT MONSTER!!! Blot monster. Birds flying away after hearing that.

The class can fly as kites.

Dorothy Ann carrying her own anemometer to test the wind speed.

Yet Ralphie has his own emergency pizza.

Arnold found something useful to power it up. Keesha's bike.

 

Continuity much? Liz must remember that Arnold loves Seaweedies.

The class can see Arnold is still going strong.

It's the monster Tim drew!

Arnold's all tired out from making that power.

It's Ralphie's turn! He's pumping it!

Everyone else had their turn, and now it's Keesha's turn.

Even Tim and Liz are tired out.

The power is off! And Keesha's bike's rear wheel is broken off!

Funny that Wanda decided to save that chipmunk over that wheel.

The wheel spins in the water.

Liz has a cute little water wheel.

One wheel can work as a wind wheel.

And the other wheel being a water wheel is very creative.

Jyoti just has to turn on the power and the power is on!

Magical Marshmallow Toaster! That sounds creative.

The class has their own camping site with power.

It's Godzilla!

Nah. It's just Liz, pretending to be a monster.

It's Blot Monster! In colour!

And it turns out Professor Frizzle is making a movie.

Blotty's gone to the deep. Foreshadowing much?

Who would've thought Arnold would believe in monsters? I can imagine it coming from Ralphie than Arnold, considering Arnold's more realistic about things.

I like how the class can fly as kites in the wind.

This episode further proves that regardless of how many people don't think this series is canon to the original series, this series acts as though it's canon. Showing Ralphie's love for pizza, and Arnold's love for Seaweedies.

This was a pretty insane, yet entertaining episode, showing all kinds of different power, and how it is made, and Arnold believing the blot monster is real is pretty crazy when you think about it. This episode does kind of feel like Getting Energised, but without Mikey. Though I have to say, Keesha's bike really came in handy with the power. But it's not without continuity from the original series. And Liz being Godzilla at the end was funny.
