TTTE S16E13: Sodor Surprise Day

Looks like it's time for me to review, quite possibly, the best episode of Thomas the Tank Engine known to mankind.

381. Sodor Surprise Day.

It is Sodor Surprise Day, which involves everyone trying to surprise each other. At Tidmouth Sheds, Thomas and Charlie are surprising each other. Gordon thinks they are being very silly indeed. Then Sir Topham Hatt arrives to inform the engines of a party at Callan Castle. Thomas is given the job of collecting bunting from Maithwaite and Gordon is told to collect fireworks from the docks.
On the way to Maithwaite, Thomas decides that he must surprise Gordon and make him laugh so that he does not think Sodor Surprise Day is silly. Thomas does not go to Maithwaite, he puffs off to find Gordon. At the coal hopper, Thomas meets Rosie. It is not long before Gordon thunders down the line and as he approaches, Thomas blasts his whistle. Rosie charges forwards, surprised, and bashes her coal trucks. Coal dust flies everywhere, covering Thomas and Rosie in soot. Rosie laughs, but Gordon does not; he still thinks Sodor Surprise Day is silly. Thomas thinks of another way to make Gordon laugh to show him that Sodor Surprise Day is fun.
Thomas puffs up to a siding. Whiff is there shunting rubbish trucks and Thomas hides behind them. He waits until Gordon approaches and emerges from behind them, blowing his whistle. Gordon does not laugh, but Whiff is surprised and bashes his trucks so hard that he sends rubbish flying everywhere. Whiff laughs, as rubbish rains down on him and Thomas. Gordon leaves in a huff. Thomas still wants to make him laugh and sets off.
At the Docks, Thomas hides behind some troublesome trucks. Presently, Gordon steams into the docks just as Harold arrives. Cranky lifts Gordon's crate of fireworks, just as Thomas comes out of hiding, blowing his whistle loudly. Cranky is startled and drops the fireworks which ignite. Harold, Gordon, and Thomas are left dodging the exploding fireworks. Thomas is shocked, he never meant for that to happen. Gordon is very cross with Thomas for spoiling his special. Gordon tells Thomas that he always thought Sodor Surprise Day was silly, but now he does not like it one bit. To make matters worse for Thomas, Sir Topham Hatt arrives. He is very cross at Thomas for not doing his job & destroyed all the fireworks & that without decorations and entertainment, the party will have to be cancelled. Thomas feels terrible. He looks at the broken fireworks crate and then at Harold and gets an idea. Thomas asks the Sir Topham Hatt not to cancel the party. Sir Topham Hatt agrees and tells Thomas to go to the wash-down to be cleaned while Gordon picks up Thomas' bunting.
At the wash-down, Rosie and Whiff are being cleaned too. Rosie and Whiff wonder if Thomas will play another trick, but Thomas is serious; he has a party to save. After being washed, Thomas puffs quickly to Harold to put his plan into action.
Later, at Callan Castle, Sir Topham Hatt is anxiously waiting for Thomas so he can start the party. Just in time, Thomas clatters in. Sir Topham Hatt inquires about the fireworks, but Thomas tells him he has something better. He blows his whistle and a brightly-lit Harold flies overhead, covered in colourful lights. Gordon thinks Harold looks splendid and laughs loudly. Thomas asks if Gordon was surprised by Harold. Gordon has to admit that he was. Thomas is delighted when Gordon admits that Sodor Surprise Day is not so silly after all.


What an episode! Just shows how safe it is to play in dangerous environments. I advise you, everyone! If you want to play around, watch this episode. Fireworks are some of the safest things in the world. Let them off, and nobody will die. Also, No, Gordon! Sodor Surprise Day is a sensible day for silly little engines. And Harold being in bright lights was the only bad thins about this episode!


This is without a doubt, the best episode of Thomas and Friends ever, and I've seen the likes of The Christmas Tree Express, The Other Side of the Mountain and Wonky Whistle. Stuff reprehensible atrocities like Edward's Exploit, Thomas and Bertie, Escape!, Old Iron, Thomas Gets Bumped, Thomas and the Special Letter, Peter Sam and the Refreshment Lady, Trust Thomas, Double Teething Troubles, Thomas the Jet Engine, The Spotless Record, Gordon and Spencer, Gordon and the Engineer, Thomas and the Runaway Car, Best Friends, The Thomas Way, Last Train for Christmas, Toad and the Whale, Duncan and the Grumpy Passenger, Best Engines Ever, Slow Stephen and Thomas the Babysitter! We need more fantastic admirable animations like this!

This is my real opinion. THIS EPISODE SUCKS! Thomas should know better than to play around with fireworks! Fireworks are extremely dangerous! Those poor workmen, as well as everyone else in the harbour, could have died! What a bumbling little blue idiot Thomas was! And I agree with Gordon the Big Engine here. "Sodor Surprise Day is a silly day for little engines!"

The only saving grace is Harold the Helicopter being in those Christmas lights, making him look beautiful, but that's not even close to enough to saving this episode from being an utterly, completely, reprehensible atrocity. Well, it's not as atrocious as The Christmas Tree Express, but this is the second most reprehensible.

TTTE S15E20: Fiery Flynn

Here I am, reviewing for all of you, the biggest joy for firefighters everywhere! Did Season 15 end on a high note? Let's find out!

368. Fiery Flynn.

Thomas arrives at Knapford with some wagons of engine parts destined for the Dieselworks. Then Flynn arrives on his way to the Sodor Search and Rescue Centre. Once there, he meets Diesel who remarks that the fire engine is never busy like he is. Flynn explains that he is waiting to be busy just as the emergency siren sounds. Rocky informs Flynn that there is a blue engine on fire, but Flynn races away before Rocky has a chance to tell him which blue engine. Edward is waiting at the Coal Hopper with Dart, who is shunting in a nearby siding. Then Flynn races in and, thinking he has found the blue engine that is on fire, squirts water all over Edward and his driver. Dart laughs at Flynn, making the fire engine even more determined to find the endangered blue engine.
At Maron, Gordon is collecting the Hatt family and Den is picking up freight. Flynn soon arrives and, thinking that Gordon is the blue engine who needs rescuing, starts spraying water at Gordon. But Gordon is not the blue engine in need of rescuing and Flynn has accidentally soaked a furious Sir Topham Hatt. Den laughs at Flynn, who apologizes and races away to find the blue engine that is on fire. Soon Flynn arrives at the Sodor Dieselworks where he finds the blue engine, Thomas, whose firebox is on fire. Flynn tries to shoot water from his cannons, but nothing happens; he is out of water. Diesel, Paxton, and Norman laugh at Flynn, but Flynn knows what he must do. He asks the Diesels for help and soon their drivers are extinguishing Thomas' fire with buckets of water. Flynn thanks the Diesels for their help and heads back to the Search and Rescue Centre to be refilled with water.
Then Diesel rattles in and teases Flynn for not being busy again. This time, Flynn just smiles. Suddenly, the emergency siren sounds again. This time Flynn does not speed off to the rescue; he waits for the full report from Rocky and then races off to Mavis' aid. Mavis is very grateful and Flynn tells her that he will come to the rescue as soon as he is called.


Did Season 15 end on a high note? YES! IT MOST CERTAINLY DID! This shows what a genius Flynn was for not putting out Thomas' fire! Steam engines don't need fireboxes to be on fire! And also, "I'm wet through!" Clever dialogue, Fat Controller. Flynn sure does know how to fight fires. If there isn't a fire, extinguish it!


Definitely a fantastic episode! We don't need crap like Fireman Sam to teach kids about fire safety, we need masterpieces like this episode! Flynn was the best firefighter in the world before he was screwed up in Too Many Fire Engines!

In all seriousness, Season 15 ended on such a reprehensible note! Flynn the Fire Truck was a complete doofus in this episode! He didn't know what a fire looks like?! Give me a break! If I ever have kids of my own, I'm letting them watch Fireman Sam, a children's show about a South Welsh fire fighter from the 1990s who knows how to extinguish fires and to teach little kids about fire safety.

Also, "Firebox on fire?!" Now, before anyone says "It's supposed to be on fire!" Steam engines have an object known as a fusible plug. If the plug fails, the engine with it could explode. If they'd explained about the fusible plug in this episode, it wouldn't have been this atrocious! Also, how did Rocky know there was a blue engine on fire in the first place? Is he psychic or something? And why did he not just say it was Thomas in the first place? Not to mention Fat Controller's quote: "But I'm wet through!" He could have said "But I'm wet!" or "But I'm wet all the way through!" All in all, a reprehensible episode.

TTTE S15E17: Wonky Whistle

Time for me to review another one of the best episodes of Thomas and Friends.

365. Wonky Whistle.

It is the day of the country show on Sodor and Thomas is at the Steamworks having his whistle replaced. Then the Fat Controller arrives to tell Thomas that he is to pick up Farmer McColl's animals and take them to the country show. He also tells Thomas to whistle to everyone and tell them about the show. Thomas is excited and tells Kevin to hurry up. The workmen soon fix the whistle, but it is wonky and are just about to straighten it, when Thomas speeds off. As he leaves, Thomas blows his whistle which makes a horrible noise. The noise startles Kevin, who rolls into a wall.
At McColl Farm, Thomas collects Farmer McColl's ducks, Katie the sheepdog, and his prize cow. Unfortunately, Thomas eagerly races off before the van's door is properly shut. Thomas decides to puff to the bridge; he is sure there will be a lot of people there that he can inform about the country show. Once there, Thomas tells them to visit the country show and blows his wonky whistle. This noise scares Katie, who leaps from the van and runs off. The people on the bridge call after Thomas, but he thinks they are waving hello. Thomas decides to visit Maithwaite station, but on the way he sees Bertie at a crossing. Thomas is sure his passengers will want to know about the show. He tells them all and then whistles, scaring the ducks out of the van. Bertie calls after Thomas, but Thomas thinks Bertie is tooting hello and carries on to Maithwaite station, where he blows his whistle once again. This time it frightens the prize cow, who runs out of the van and across the platform. The stationmaster shouts after Thomas, but once again, Thomas thinks he is calling hello.
Soon Thomas arrives at the country show. Thomas is surprised to see that there is no one at the show. But not as surprised as Farmer McColl when he opens Thomas' van. Thomas is upset, he was told to tell everyone about the show and to deliver the animals, but has done neither properly. Thomas blows his wonky whistle and scares some sheep, who run out of their pen. Farmer McColl waves and shouts at Thomas as he runs after the runaway sheep. Thomas concludes that his wonky whistle has scared the sheep and must have scared the other animals away too.
Thomas races to the Steamworks to have his whistle straightened and then chuffs to McColl Farm to collect the animals' favourite foods. First Thomas collects Katie the sheepdog, then the ducks, and finally the prize cow. Eventually, Thomas arrives back at the country show where Katie rounds up the runaway sheep. Then Thomas goes around the Island telling everyone about the country show again. Back at the showground, the country show is crowded with people. The Fat Controller is delighted and gives Thomas one last job: to declare the show open by blowing his whistle. The country show officially opened and everyone cheered - even Katie wagged her tail.


What can I say? This episode was super ultra brilliant! It shows how much of a genius Thomas was during the Nitrogen era! Those workers did try fixing his whistle, but he managed to go to the country show while they were on the ladder. Who cares about that? Those workers deserved to have been about to die!


That whistle did sound very realistic indeed. All whistles in real life make that slide whistle sound when wonky! Thomas sure was clever to have taken all of those animals in one van. It's too bad the moral of this episode was shot in the face by a later episode that sucked hard known as Very Important Sheep. Screw Helen Farrall for doing this episode wrong with that Season 19 atrocity! This episode rocked and that's final!

In actuality, this episode was absolutely atrocious! Wonky whistles don't sound like that! They sound like a weak straight placed whistle! Thomas could have killed those workmen by running off like that! Was he deaf or something? Surely he could have heard Bertie the Bus telling him that his animals in the van were coming out of that van!

Just be thankful that Helen Farrall did a rewrite of this episode for Season 19, and done right too. I will admit, I never thought this was the worst to begin with. (I'm looking at you, Christmas Tree Express!) But it's up there somewhere.

TTTE S15E08: Up, Up & Away

I thought I'd do some reviews on some of the best episodes of Thomas the Tank Engine ever!

356. Up, Up and Away.

Thomas and Percy are charged with the task of transporting Mr. Bubbles' giant balloon to the show-ground. Thomas decides that they should puff along the woodland track, but Percy thinks the balloon might rub up against a branch and pop. So he suggests that they take their special along the coastal line. Thomas worries that the balloon might blow away along the windy coast, but does not want to upset his best friend. Along the coast track, Thomas' worries become true and the balloon is blown high into the sky. Thomas thinks they should race after it, but Percy suggests that they wait for the balloon to return to them. Thomas does not want to upset his friend, so he agrees. Then Gordon arrives on his way to pick up Sir Topham, Lady, and Dowager Hatt. Gordon tells the two engines that the balloon will not return to them, the wind will blow it away for good - and that is exactly what happens.
The two friends puff back to the docks to collect another big balloon from Mr. Bubbles. Soon they were clattering along the line when they arrive at a tunnel. Thomas can see that the tunnel is too small for the giant balloon, but Percy is sure that they can pull the balloon through it. Although Thomas disagrees, he does not want to upset Percy and they try to force the balloon through. Unfortunately, it gets wedged in the tunnel and Gordon arrives with the Hatt family aboard; the balloon had blocked his tracks. Percy is upset, so Thomas decides to leave the balloon and the pair go back to the docks to fetch another one from Mr. Bubbles.
By now, the two engines are running very late. They race as fast as they can when, suddenly, they spot Gordon racing towards them. The pair stop urgently and the balloon is freed. It travels high into the sky before slowly deflating - knocking off Sir Topham, Lady, and Dowager Hatt's hats off. The Fat Controller demands an explanation. Thomas explains that he did not use his common sense and did what Percy wanted so that he would not be upset, but now he is anyway. Percy tells Thomas that he cannot be upset by his best friend and then suggests that they puff back to the docks and pick up yet another balloon. Thomas disagrees and tells Percy that first they should ask the drivers to pick up the Hatt's hats. Next Thomas decides that they must clear the tunnel by bursting the jammed balloon before finally returning to the docks to pick up another balloon from an exhausted Mr. Bubbles.
This time, they take the woodland track to the show. Percy admits that Thomas was right, it is the best track to take. During Mr. Bubbles' performance at the Balloon Show, one of the balloons Thomas and Percy lost earlier floats down to everyone's amazement.


Wow! This episode was super ultra fantastic! We got to see so many balloons float. The most realistic thing about this episode. What was most realistic about this was how the balloons didn't burst when the cinders and ashes touched them! Not to mention how just one light flatbed always needs 2 engines to pull it.

It's too bad that Mister Bubbles didn't blow up the balloons at the show, but forget that! This episode rocks! It's one of the best episodes in the Thomas and Friends brand ever! Sharon Miller did wonders writing this episode! Kudos to you, Sharon! Kudos!

Alright, here is my real opinion on this episode. This episode sucks! It was unrealistic to the top! Thomas and Percy were complete idiots, Mister Bubbles just didn't go with them to the balloon show to blow up the balloons! And the worst thing was, the balloons didn't burst, even when touching the engines' smoke!

I will admit, the only positive I find with this episode is Michael's line: "The Hatts were hatless." But that's not enough to save this episode from being reprehensible!

HHPAY S1E05: Showdown, In the Cards & Team Teen

I'm back, everyone! I'm kicking up another review on Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi.

13. Showdown.

While driving out West, the Puffy bus gets caught in a dust storm and smashes into a building – where three cowboys crawl from the rubble. It isn’t until later that the girls realize that the cowboys are the infamous Burlap Boys.

Yeah, Kaz sure was driving on ragged roads, wasn't he?

Here we are, fellas! The first episode to star our infamous Burlap Boys!

Yeah, this saloon sure looks lame, I'll agree.



Yep, Ami and Yumi sure are wanted for crimes they didn't even commit, huh?

The sheriff is definitely a chicken. I mean literally!

Now, where did Kaz San get this pieces of fried chicken? Hmm......

Well, this episode really was just very good. Not great, but good. We did get an homage to those old country-western films, but yeah, that saloon looked lame. Good thing those girls tied those burlap boys in the end.

My rating: 8.5/10.

14. In the Cards.

Ami and Yumi duel against each other in Stu-Pi-Doh (a parody of the card game Yu-Gi-Oh!) to win the heart of a nerd named King Chad.

Yep, these girls sure are into Stu-Pi-Doh. Yu-Gi-Oh, anyone?

I must say, this Rock-n-Roll concert looks interesting in a card convention.

Yep, here we are, fellas. The first ep to star that nerd, King Chad.



These girls sure are love struck over that nerd, aren't they?

I must say, this pig this black knight is riding looks a lot like Pumbaa from The Lion King.

Yep, Yumi sure is a snowman here, isn't she?

Um...Abraham Lincoln, anyone?

Gee, how can these girls fall for a cheapskate nerd like Chad? I will admit, this ep does pay homage to Yu-Gi-Oh. I must admit, it was funny the way these two girls played against each other over Chad, and at the end, some other nerd.

My rating: 9/10.

15. Team Teen.

Aired: 10 December 2004.



After Yumi inadvertently helps a team of teen superheroes thwart their nemesis, she and Ami are asked to join the squad. The girls hit the streets fighting evil and they soon face a tough foe.

Here we are, the only appearance of Team Teen. Definitely a parody of Teen Titans, a show the real Puffy sang the theme for. They also sing the theme for that imitation show known as "Go!".

Yep, their tower definitely shows it's a parody.

I must say, Ami and Yumi's outfits aren't that bad, really.

That snowman sure reminds me of those snowball hurling ones from Banjo-Kazooie.

Well, this was a nice parody of Teen Titans to say the least, but what the Team Teen did at the end, firing Ami and Yumi, was a bit of a letdown. They were only trying to rescue them. Oh well, still a good ep.

My rating: 9.5/10.

Final thoughts:

Welcome to the home of parodies, fellow rock stars! We get a parody of those old Country-Western movies, a parody of Yu-Gi-Oh, (Stu-Pi-Doh) and a parody of Teen Titans. (Team Teen) It may not be as great as the previous ones, but still a great watch this one.

HHPAY S1E04: Ami Goes Bad, Robo-Pop & Metal Mental

Here I am, rocking this review! In all seriousness, here is my review on the 4th Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi episode.



10. Ami Goes Bad

When Ami buys a pair of drumsticks, she turns bad and Kaz explains that they belonged to a famous drummer. Yumi and Kaz plot to stop Ami before she causes real damage.

Yep. Ami sure has the postures.

Kiss me, I'm yours!

Yumi sure will never get back a certain Tuesday, huh?

And here, the first bad guy of the series who actually served as a bad guy, and that's Crazy Styxx, and here are his sticks that he lived on through after he died in a concert accident.

And here is how he looked when he was still alive.

Yeah, wouldn't want that tattoo, would I?

Ha! Kaz has hair again!

Oooh! Ami sure looks badass here! Tell me, does this Ami bloke look badass or what?

Question: I'm not 100% about Crazy Styxx's accent. Was he from South-East England or was he from Australia? Answers on a postcard, please.

I must say, this is one amusing episode! Ami turning into a badass rocker, and all Kaz and Yumi had to do was turn her back to normal! Good work Kaz and Yumi! Looks like Crazy had passed away once and for all by accidently committing suicide in the fire. Another hilarious one!

11. Robo-Pop.

Aired: 3 December 2004.

Kaz builds Ami and Yumi robots in order for the pair to cover more concerts and personal appearances so the real Ami and Yumi can have more spare time off without losing any profits. Pretty soon, the robot versions are making numerous appearances, performing concerts, starring in movies and stage musicals, and waiting on Kaz hand and foot – all at the same time!

Here we are, fellow rock stars! The first time we see our rock girls in their swim suits.

Yes, they sure scream a lot whenever Kaz does stupid ideas like this.

Another prime example of Kaz being a greedy cheapskate.

Oh, Kaz! I know how it feels! I'd feel the same way if my best scheme failed.

Strange. Yumi said that Kaz was slobbering on Yumi Yoshimura's new boots, when clearly, he's slobbering on Ami's. And also, he was slobbering as in crying tears.

Oh, Kaz! You sure don't know when to give up on stupid ideas, huh?

Definitely another of the best episodes! This one was over-the-top hilarious and it even gave Kaz Harada his comeuppance at the end. At least he wasn't making Ami-bots or Yumi-bots at the end.

12. Metal Mental.

Aired: 3 December 2004.

Puffy gets booked on tour with Metalbreath – the most obnoxious, nastiest and least talented heavy metal band in the world. Ami and Yumi soon grow tired of Metalbreath and plot to get rid of the group.

Oh boy! Here we are, the first appearance of Metalbreath, whose stage names are, (bottom picture from left to right) Carnivore, Roadkill and Scar Tissue.

Yep, Ami and Yumi are out of the battle.



Yeah, they're definitely a hard metal band!

It sure was hilarious of them to get redesigned.

This part always cracks me up whenever I see it!

Here we go! The 2 girls performing in their own style!

I must say, this episode was ultra hilarious! Of course, Metalbreath were acting like any real heavy metal band were, but their comeuppance made it for me completely! When the audience laughed and Metalbreath looked at themselves and screamed! Definitely the best part of this one!

My rating: 10/10.

Final thoughts:

What an episode! We get to see a bad side of Ami, the girls meeting their robot clones, and lastly, a rival band who play heavy metal. Yep, definitely one of the better of the series!
