According to Ms. Frizzle, there is an island so new it still has yet to be discovered. Carlos wants to name it "Carlos Island," but Dorothy Ann has decided to get a name by looking in a book. However when they arrive, there is no island. Ms. Frizzle says it is because the island has not arrived yet. In the end, it turns out that the island was created by an underwater volcano.
This is interesting. Considering the topic of this episode, the entire class (sans Dorothy Ann) was building a giant globe, similar to the series premiere when they made their own model of the Solar System.
This is true. The Earth is always changing, yet Liz is still in the spring. Bouncing around the classroom.
More pieces of proof the bus is sentient. It's coughing up ash and smoke. And later, it's enjoying riding the waves. Further reminding me why I got into this series as a kid.
Oh boy. This is something Carlos shouldn't have done. Had he not jumped into the inflatable boat so hard, Dorothy Ann's book bag would've been safe. Or better yet, Dorothy Ann could've either put the handle of the bag over her shoulder or she could've left it on The Magic School Bus.
Er....is it just me or was Ralphie looking up Dorothy Ann's skirt? And were Keesha and Wanda doing the same? They obviously didn't mean to since they were getting her out of the water when she jumped in.
Funny how Ralphie said that the tentacles of an octopus should be called "Octacles" since octopuses have 8 tentacles while squids have 10.
Could this sunken ship have belonged to Ms. Frizzle? I mean look at it. Its prow has a figurehead of Ms. Frizzle.
Clever Liz, wearing a gas mask. This must be the running gag. Carlos smelling poison gas, and blaming Arnold. It's obvious why Carlos blamed Arnold.
More proof that Wanda hates the cold. The deeper you go in the ocean, the colder it gets.
Yep. More proof the bus is sentient. As Keesha pointed out. Even vehicles can get too cold.
Here's the highlight of the episode. Carlos has turned into Dorothy Ann. Even Arnold heard Carlos' voice turn into Dorothy Ann's.
Now that's creative. Have The Magic School Bus punch the rock blocking the top of the volcano.
Looks like Liz was the first to discover that island. Liz Island. Would've been better if it was called "According to my Research" island, "Carlos Island" or "I knew I should've stayed home today Island".
That's a funny bit about the Producer's Segment. The mini rock erupting to keep Liz from hitting that ball.
This episode a lot of us can relate to in some ways. I've been Dorothy Ann. We've all been Dorothy Ann. How? Well, if you lose something that's precious to you, you'd do anything to get it back, like Dorothy Ann did here. Maybe it wouldn't have happened if she'd left the book bag on the main character.
Highlights of this episode include Ralphie's octacle joke, Wanda calling Ralphie and Keesha "Weaselly Wimps" when ordering them to pull Dorothy Ann out of the water, Carlos turning into Dorothy Ann, and Carlos and Dorothy Ann arguing about what to call the book about the island Liz discovered. Also, Carlos blaming Arnold for the foul smells. Carlos thought Arnold farted.
Notice Carlos and Dorothy Ann bickering throughout this episode. This must be another reason almost everyone ships them.
One interesting fact about the Producer Segment for this is that the caller was none other than Annick Obonsawin, who would later go on to voice Inez from Cyberchase.
Also, you may notice that Arnold's voice and Tim's voice are different in this episode compared to the first season.
The reason Tim's voice is different is because in this episode, he was voiced by Andre Ottley-Lorant. I take it he replaced Max Beckford as the voice for Tim because by the time voice work for this season started, Max's voice was far too deep for him to continue voicing Tim. The difference is Max's accent is somewhat African, and Andre is African-Canadian. This also explains why Tim's voice in this is appropriate for a kid who's supposed to be 8 or 9 in this season.
And the reason Arnold's voice is different is because in this episode, he was voiced by Danny Tamberelli, who some of you may know for starring in The Adventures of Pete and Pete and All That! around the time. The reason they made this change was because by the time Season 2 started voice production, Amos Crawley's voice was too deep for him to continue voicing Arnold. The difference between the voices is that in the first season, Arnold has an American accent that would slip to a Canadian accent. The reason being Amos is Canadian. And in this episode, Arnold has an American accent with no Canadian slips. The reason being Danny is American.
This was a very edutaining way to start the 2nd season. Dorothy Ann losing her books, showing we've all been like her in some way, Carlos becoming Dorothy Ann while reading her book, Ralphie's Octacle joke, Wanda further expressing her dislike of the cold, and the class (sans Arnold and Carlos) rafted a river of lava on The Magic School Bus, such a fine thing to do. Of course real kids can never go into volcanoes, or else they die. It was a good way to start the season and to teach kids about volcanoes and how they form islands.
Whuh-oh. Things are getting ugly here. Carlos and Dorothy Ann are arguing. Not sure who started it? Dorothy Ann because she spent her time reading or Carlos because he pointed out the obvious of how she was spending her time reading?
"Let me remind you this is a no nail biting flight."
What makes this funny is how nervous Arnold gets when going on weird field trips.
"Carlos Island!"
What makes this funny is Dorothy Ann calling it ridiculous and Carlos retorts that Dorothy Ann would call it "According to my research Island".

Yep, they just couldn't agree on a name, and that's what makes them good foils for each other, just like how Ralphie and Keesha are foils to each other, and Arnold and Wanda are foils to each other since each pair are opposites. They could've just called it "Discovering According to my Research Island by Dorothy and Carlos"."You mean 'by Carlos and D.A.'."
